Will Magnetic Hard Disc Diminish
DST Technology has been working with Magnetic Hard Disc Drive and related industry for more than 2 decades, we are supplying our PVA sponge roller, nodular sponge roller and disc type sponge pad to several customers in the industry. Everyone should agree the hard disc industry is setting up with very high standard as compare to other industries. Besides the high standard, as the PVA sponge supplier, we are required frequent breakthrough in technology in order to match with hard disc drive stringent requirement.
However, hard disc drive has faced several critical moments throughout the past two decades. This year, year 2016, we could easily feel that hard disc and related industry has facing more challenge than any other season in the pass. The significant reduction in hard disc output and forecast has hammered the industry badly.
How Bad Is Hard Disc Industry
From our visiting and discussion with the several hard disc related manufacturer, mostly tell us they are having a significant capacity shrink on output. In average, the output capacity shrink 40% compare to year 2015. Perhaps hard disc volume has been in the declining trend since 5 years ago. This year, the output volume shrinks drastically due to worldwide economy slow down.
User Preferences in Storage Media
If you happen to shop around in the electronic market, you will agree that there are many ways we can get in touch with the social. The development of wearable device and smart phone has become the major tool in social networking, whereby computer and tablet mainly used in routine job.
Wearable devices, smart phone and tablets are all free from traditional hard disc. This left only desktop and notebook still install with hard disc. However SSD Hard Disc currently is offering much lower prices than several years ago. The price difference for a 128G capacity SSD is about USD50 higher than a magnetic hard drive. This lead many users have swapped to SSD instead of magnetic hard drive.
Will Magnetic Hard Drive Diminish?
No matter how aggressive with the development of SSD, there are still several reasons for magnetic hard disc or traditional hard disc to be alive in the market:
- Lower cost per capacity
- Higher capacity for mass storage application
- Cost effective for tight budget user
Obviously many desktop or notebook users who swap to SDD hard disc, we are very sure those users will never use magnetic hard disc in near future in their computer. Under this circumstance, the market share for magnetic hard disc is shrinking.
However, the bright side for magnetic hard disc is the storage technology improvement. The design capacity per plater in magnetic hard disc is giving user more allowance in storage ability. We anticipate there is still need for magnetic hard disc even the market share is shrinking. Anyway, magnetic hard disc has been in the market for more than 3 decades and we are ready to welcome new technology in storage media.
