Effect on Formaldehyde on Sponge Roller

In our previous article, we know from our reader saying that they are interested to find out the impact on sponge roller with high Formaldehyde left over.

PVA Sponge with Formaldehyde

In this article, we will not explain the impact on formaldehyde from chemistry equation; we rather share with our reader on a simple experiment we carry out on PVA sponge roller.

Basic Setup of Experiment

PVA sponge surface comparison

We are using below material to carry out this experiment.

  • PVA Sponge Roller with length 50mm, 2 sample. Sponge Roller Sample A & Sample B.
  • Formaldehyde solution
  • KOH solution.
  • Baker

Experiment Procedure

In this comparison test, we are comparing the sponge roller appearance after merge with Formaldehyde and KOH solution.

Below is the process step:

  1. Std Sponge
  • Take out Sample A, mark as “Std Sponge”.
  • Merge in KOH Solution.
  • Bake for 24hours.
  • Observe the appearance on Sample A.
  1. With Formaldehyde Sponge
  • Take out Sample B, mark as “w/ Formaldehyde Sponge”.
  • Merge in Formaldehyde Solution
  • Merge in KOH Solution.
  • Bake for 24hours.
  • Observe the appearance on Sample B.

Compare the sponge appearance for both PVA Sponge Sample A & B.

 Experiment Finding and Result

Sample A. The PVA sponge does not merge with Formaldehyde still remain white colour even after baking stress test.

Sample B. The PVA sponge merges with Formaldehyde turn yellowish after performing bake test.

The sponge roller turns yellowish shows the sponge already aged.

Through the experiment, the sponge with Formaldehyde will accelerate the aging process. DST want to achieve better sponge better sponge quality, we have setup an improved sponge cleaning process in order to remove the residue of Formaldehyde which stay in the sponge.
